We've all heard the catch-cry that there's no such thing as a safe tan. Though it's hard to believe, the tanned look that your skin gets after being out in the sun or visiting the solarium/tanning salon is the result of your skin desperately trying to protect itself from UV damage. So while your tan might look great now, soon enough the damage will start to become apparent through wrinkles, discoloration and even, in some cases, skin cancer. In order to reproduce the healthy appearance of a tan without the associated UV dangers, many people have turned to self tanning lotions and spray tans instead. But just how healthy is your fake tan product? While DHA (Dihydroxyacetone), the active ingredient found in most tanning lotions, has been FDA approved--and we should note only for some very limited uses—bear in mind that the myriad other ingredients included in your self tanner may not be. In addition, some one-time FDA-approved chemicals used in tanning sprays have since had their approval withdrawn due to the potential health risks that they pose and do notice that the term acetone which is a hazardous ingredient is used in the processing of DHA for regular self-tanner brands. You can find the word acetone at the end of the the full word for DHA- Dihydroxyacetone which means it's an ingredient used as part of DHA the sugar in self tanners, and it is not found in 100% Herbal Instant Tan- it stands alone from others in this way.
