100% Herbal Instant Tan - A safe Alternative

10/15/2013

Don't want to expose your skin to the sun's damaging rays, but don't want to miss out on that sun-kissed glow? Consider striking a compromise with sunless tanning products like 100% Herbal Instant Tan which uses zero chemicals. Start by understanding how sunless tanning products work — and the importance of applying them correctly and carefully.

How do sunless tanning products work? Sunless tanning products, also called self-tanners, can give your skin a tanned look without exposing it to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Sunless tanning products are commonly sold as creams, gels, lotions and sprays you apply to your skin. Professional spray-on tanning also is available at many salons, spas and tanning businesses.

The active ingredient in most sunless tanning products is dihydroxyacetone (DHA). When applied to the skin, DHA reacts with dead cells in the outermost layer of skin to temporarily darken the skin's appearance. The coloring doesn't wash off, but it gradually fades as the dead skin cells slough off — typically within a few days.

Most sunless tanning products don't contain sunscreen. If you spend time outdoors, sunscreen remains essential.

What about sunless tanning pills? Sunless tanning pills, which typically contain the color additive canthaxanthin, are unsafe. When taken in large amounts, canthaxanthin can turn your skin orange and cause hives. Sunless tanning pills can also cause liver damage and lead to the formation of crystals in the retina of the eye (canthaxanthin retinopathy).

What can you expect from sunless tanning products? It usually takes about an hour to see results. Full color typically appears within eight to 24 hours, but 100% Herbal Instant Tan is the only one which drys instantly as it's rubbed on. It works like a bronzer which doesn't get too orangey like other self-tanners.

Is sunless tanning safe? Topical sunless tanning products are generally considered safe alternatives to sunbathing, as long as they're used as directed except for the chemicals which 100% Herbal Instant Tan doesn't have. So if you'd like to turn to a more green product which is health and body friendly, it's the best alternative.

Keep in mind that spray-on tanning or mist-on tanning from a salon or spa is typically applied to all parts of your body, including your face, to ensure an even color. This creates a potential for the product to get into and around your eyes, near your nostrils or onto your lips. The risks, if any, of inhaling or ingesting DHA are unknown — so close your eyes and hold your breath while the tanner is applied. You may also want to request or bring along protective devices, such as goggles or nose plugs.

Dihydroxyacetone Chemical Could Damage DNA, ABC News Finds

8/11/2012

A chemical in spray tan could possibly alter and damage DNA, according to an investigation by ABC News.

Ten recent studies on the chemical, called dihydroxyacetone, or DHA, were reviewed by medical experts who were called upon by ABC News. However, the studies were only on cells in a lab and not in humans.

"These compounds in some cells could actually promote the development of cancers or malignancies," Dr. Rey Panettieri, who is a lung specialist and toxicologist at the University of Pennsylvania, told ABC News. "And if that's the case then we need to be wary of them."

MyHealthNewsDaily reported that DHA is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for outside use only, meaning it shouldn't be eaten, inhaled, put on the lips or used near the eyes. However, some tanning booths use spray tan that contains DHA, which has the potential to be inhaled if people aren't given the right protective gear, ABC News reported.

What Are The Dangers Of Self Tanners?

4/17/2012

Most people are aware than sunbathing can lead to skin cancer, but tan skin is still viewed as healthy. Self-tanners can help create an artificial glow without the extreme risks. However, self-tanners may also have some risks of their own, although the risks are smaller. According to MayoClinic.com, self-tanners are considered safer than conventional tanning, but the products must be used as directed, and individuals may experience some negative side effects.

Allergic Reactions The active ingredient in self-tanning lotions and creams is dihydroxyacetone, or DHA. Research led by M. Morren at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium found that some people have contact allergies to DHA. Some people can also be allergic to other ingredients in self-tanning products, such as fragrances and preservatives; none of which are found in 100% Herbal Instant Tan.

Increased Risk of Sunburn A suntan encourages your body to produce more melanin, but a sunless tan does not. When you use a self-tanner, you still need to use sunscreen or you are at risk of sunburn and sun damage. A 2010 study led by Vilma E. Cokkinides at the American Cancer Society found that teens who used self-tanners were more likely to engage in other risky tanning behaviors, including using indoor tanning lamps or beds and neglecting to use sunscreen.

Self-tanning Pills Self-tanning pills contain canthaxanthin, a color additive that may cause your skin to turn orange. According to MayoClinic.com, self-tanning pills may cause liver damage and formation of crystals in the retina of the eye. Canthaxanthin is not approved by the FDA for use in tanning pills, but because it is allowed as a color additive in food, some companies use it in tanning pills. Self-tanning pills are considered unsafe for use. A better choice would be 100% Herbal Instant Tan which is a completely herbal/organic ingredient based colorant without the additives/preservatives and chemicals including DHA which is excluded.

DHA- Dihydroxyacetone Safety Considerations

11/15/2011

For the 24 hours after a self-tanner (containing high DHA levels, ~5%) is applied, the skin is especially susceptible to free-radical damage from sunlight, according to a 2007 study led by Katinka Jung of the Gematria Test Lab in Berlin. Forty minutes after the researchers treated skin samples with high levels of DHA they found that more than 180 percent additional free radicals formed during sun exposure compared with untreated skin. Another self-tanner ingredient, erythulose, produced a similar response at high levels. For a day after self-tanner application, excessive sun exposure should be avoided and sunscreen should be worn outdoors, they say; an antioxidant cream could also minimize free radical production. Although some self-tanners contain sunscreen, its effect will not last long after application, and a fake tan itself will not protect the skin from UV exposure.
The study by Jung et al. further confirms earlier results demonstrating that dihydroxyacetone in combination with dimethylisosorbide enhances the process of (sun-based) tanning. This earlier study also found that dihydroxyacetone also has an effect on the amino acids and nucleic acids which is bad for the skin. The free radicals are due to the generation of AGE (Advanced Glycation Products) such as amadori products (a type of AGE) as a result of the reaction of DHA with the skin. AGEs are behind the damage to the skin that occurs with high blood sugar in diabetes where similar glycation occurs.

100% Herbal Instant Tan does not use DHA as an ingredient so users don't have to worry about free radical formation. It only uses 100% herbal edible ingredients, without the chemicals of other brands and gives a great tan color as a bronzing lotion. You can use a sunscreen over it if you plan to go into the sun.

Sunless Tanning

To avoid exposure to UVB and UVA rays, or in sunless seasons, some people darken their skin using sunless tanning (also known as self-tanners). A number of types of sunless tanning options are available, including stainers which are based on dihydroxyacetone (DHA); bronzers, which basically are dyes; tan accelerators, based on tyrosine and psolarens. Some people use make-up to create a tanned appearance. Another option is to tan using a tanning bed or sunlamp. The use of a tanning bed exposes the user to similar UV radiation as that of the sun.

Many sunless tanning products are available in the form of creams, gels, lotions, and sprays that are self-applied on the skin. Another option is the use of bronzers which are cosmetics that provide temporary effects such as 100% Herbal Instant Tan, an all natural ingredient bronzer. There is also a professional spray-on tanning option or “tanning booths” that is offered by spas, salons, and tanning businesses.

Spray tanning does not mean that a color is sprayed on the body. What is used in the spray tanning process is a colorless chemical which burns the dead cells located on the top layer of the skin, resulting in a brown color. The two main active ingredients used in most of the sunless tanners are dihydroxyacetone and erythrulose.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved the use of DHA spray tanning booths because it has not received safety data to support this specific use. DHA is a permitted color additive for cosmetic use restricted to external application. When used in a commercial spray tanning booth, areas such as the eyes, lips or mucous membrane are exposed to the DHA which is a non permitted use of the product.

DHA Based Products

The most effective sunless tanning involves the use of lotions and sprays that contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. DHA is not a dye, stain or paint, but causes a chemical reaction with the amino acids in the dead layer on the skin surface. This is similar to a reaction well known to food chemists called the Maillard reaction. This refers to the browning process during food manufacturing and storage. It does not involve skin pigmentation nor does it require exposure to ultraviolet light to initiate the color change. The effect is temporary and will fade gradually over 3 to 10 days. 100% Herbal Instant Tan does not use DHA, only herbal food ingredients which are safe for any skin type. It's ingredients include skin preservation qualities which can deter premature wrinkles if used instead of tanning beds, sun tanning or spray tans which dry out the skin causing wrinkles due to radiation exposure and chemical dry out.

Some products use erythrulose combined with DHA. Erythrulose works identically to DHA on the skin surface, but develops more slowly. The two chemicals used together may produce a longer lasting sunless tan.

Dihydroxyacetone or erythrulose may cause contact dermatitis. First time users of sunless tanning products are advised to apply the product to a small patch of skin and wait 24 hours before a full body application.

Tanning lotions can be classified as bronzers, accelerators, and tingling lotions. Tingling lotions refer to indoor tanning lotion accelerators and maximizers that produce a tingling sensation when they are applied. It is believed that the tingle factor increases blood flow to the upper layers of the skin which brings more oxygen and affects melanin. This tingling sensation will vary depending on the skin type from mild to very strong. You must ask yourself is it a normal thing for skin to feel tingly and the long term affects of such a reaction such as skin cancers since something foreign is rubbed into the skin. Usually when the body shows odd feelings or reactions is because it's trying to fight off the foreign substance invading it's space. This is why is would be safer to use 100% all natural beauty products such as 100% Herbal Instant Tan which only uses edible food ingredients that offer the same bronze natural color without tingles, heat, contact dermatitis or other negative affects of various other self tanning lotions.

Professional spray-tans applications are available from spas, salons and gymnasiums by both hand held sprayer and in the form of sunless or UV-Free spray booths. Spray Tan booths which resemble an enclosed shower stall, sprays the sunless tanning solution over the entire body, however since it said to be unsafe to breathe in the DHA ingredient in this spray tans it has been recommended to hold ones breath or not use them at all; as it can affect the respiratory system in the long run.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states when using DHA-containing products as an all-over spray or mist in a commercial spray "tanning" booth, it may be difficult to avoid exposure in a manner for which DHA is not approved, including the area of the eyes, lips, or mucous membrane, or even internally. DHA is not approved by the FDA for inhalation.

Consequently, FDA advises asking the following questions when considering commercial facilities where DHA is applied by spraying or misting:
"Are consumers protected from exposure in the entire area of the eyes, in addition to the eyes themselves? Are consumers protected from exposure on the lips and all parts of the body covered by mucous membrane? Are consumers protected from internal exposure caused by inhaling or ingesting the product?
If the answer to any of these questions is "no," the consumer is not protected from the unapproved use of this color additive. Consumers should request measures to protect their eyes and mucous membranes and prevent inhalation."

DHA Risks in Spray Tans

6/9/2011

Most sunless tanning products do not contain sunscreen, therefore, they do not provide any protection against ultraviolet rays when the person is outdoors. To offer protection against UV rays the tanner should contain an SPF. The ingredients known to offer appropriate protection are titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, or avobenzone.

Risks of inhaling or ingesting DHA are not known. People are advised to close their eyes or protect them with goggles and to hold their breath or wear nose plugs while they have a spray-on tanning applied.[6]

Many self tanners use chemical fragrances which may cause skin allergies or may trigger asthma. Furthermore, some of them contain parabens. Parabens are preservatives that can affect the endocrine system.[7]

Tanners can stain clothes. It is therefore important to look for fast drying formulas and wait around 10 to 15 minutes for the product to dry before dressing. 100% Herbal Instant Tan drys instantly in less than 1 minute when rubbed on quickly because it is water based and not oily.

For the 24 hours after self-tanner (containing high DHA levels, ~5%) is applied, the skin is especially susceptible to free-radical damage from sunlight, according to a 2007 study led by Katinka Jung of the Gematria Test Lab in Berlin.[8] Forty minutes after the researchers treated skin samples with high levels of DHA they found that more than 180 percent additional free radicals formed during sun exposure compared with untreated skin. 100% Herbal Instant Tan is different because it does not use DHA, only food based ingredients, no chemicals so there is no connection to free-radical damage from sunlight.
